Obtaining the Latest Version of NCSA's Mosaic

From Within an Earlier Version of Mosaic

  1. Use the middle mouse button when you click to go to NCSA's ftp site for Mosaic binaries. (This way, Mosaic spawns a new window, so that you can still refer to this page for instructions.)
  2. In the new window, toggle the Options/Load to Local Disk or Options/Binary Transfer Mode to on.
  3. Click Mosaic-indy-2.6.Z (for SGIs with IRIX 5.2 or 5.3) or Mosaic-ibm-2.6.Z, depending on which machine you have
(If you have another machine and if a version of Mosaic exists for it, the Mosaic executable should include the machine name in it--just click that name and then substitute the appropriate name in the following instructions.)
  4. When the dialog box appears, use it to move to the desired directory (on your machine) and to store the file with its original name (Mosaic-indy-2.6.Z or Mosaic-ibm-2.6.Z)
  5. Close this second Mosaic window.
  6. Now go to a shell window and follow the instructions for uncompressing Mosaic and making it executable
Note: If the NCSA site is too busy, some mirror ftp sites that may also distribute Mosaic and also other browsers include:

By ftp from a Shell Window

  1. Downloading Mosaic from NCSA

Enter the following at your operating system prompt:

    ftp ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu

Log in with the name anonymous, and enter your email address as the password.

    Now, enter:

    cd Mosaic/Unix/binaries/2.6
    binary
    get Mosaic-indy-2.6.Z

    OR:

    get Mosaic-ibm-2.6.Z

(If you have another machine and if a version of Mosaic exists for it, the Mosaic executable should include the machine name in it--just get that file and substitute the appropriate name in the following instructions.)

    And finally:

    quit

You would use similar instructions with any of the other ftp sites listed above.

  2. Uncompressing Mosaic and making it executable

You may move the file you just downloaded to some other directory (for example, ~/bin).

Move (cd) to the directory containing the downloaded Mosaic file. Then enter:

    uncompress Mosaic-indy-2.6.Z or Mosaic-ibm-2.6.Z
    chmod a+x Mosaic-indy-2.6 or Mosiac-ibm-2.6
    mv Mosiac-indy-2.6 (or Mosiac-ibm-2.6) Mosaic

Now, quit your current html browser and start up your new Mosaic by entering (this pathname is also contained in the printed Release Notes):

    Mosaic -home $BIOSYM/data/discover/html/Disco_Home.html

    or:

    Mosaic $BIOSYM/data/discover/html/Disco_Home.html

(This assumes that you have already sourced the .cshrc file that defines the $BIOSYM environment variable, which may have happened automatically when you logged in.)

Click the second-last link on that page for information and software needed to enable the hypermedia capability of Mosaic.
