Discover Tutorials - Setting up To Run Them

Using the biosym_tutorial Script

If you have not run a tutorial for the Discover program recently, you may need to reconfigure your tutorial directory, as follows (if you cannot find a file that you are instructed to use while running a tutorial lesson, start with Step 4 below):

  1. List your home directory to check whether a directory named tutorial exists in your home directory.

If it does not, then you may skip the remainder of this section and go on to Introductions to the Tutorials or directly to the lesson you are interested in.

  2. If a tutorial directory is present in your home directory, you can quickly check what products' tutorials have been installed by listing the .product_name files. In your home directory, issue the following at the UNIX prompt:

    > ls -l tutorial/.??*

If .discover is present, the directory has been configured for running the Discover tutorials. Unless its contents have been altered, you can go to Introductions to the Tutorials or directly to the lesson you are interested in. If you have reason to suspect that its contents have been altered, follow the instructions in Step 3.

  3. If .discover is not present or if some files belonging to the Discover lessons may have been removed, you need to reconfigure your tutorial directory by using biosym_tutorial -i instead of biosym_tutorial when you start a tutorial lesson. Be sure to enter discover or all when you are prompted to supply the products whose tutorial files you want to install. You may now continue to Introductions to the Tutorials or directly to the lesson you are interested in.

  4. If, while running a tutorial, you do not find a file that you are instructed to use, you need to quit the Insight interface, then start up the tutorial again with the -i option, by issuing the command biosym_tutorial -i. This gives you an opportunity to install or add to the Discover tutorial files.

How the biosym_tutorial Script Works

When you issue the biosym_tutorial command without the -i option, the script checks for the existence of a directory called tutorial in your home directory and whether it contains any .product_name files.

If this directory is not present or it exists but does not contain any .product_name files, you are asked to enter the products for which you want to set up a tutorial. After you finish choosing the product(s), the script makes a directory called tutorial (if it does not already exist), inserts the appropriate files and links in it, and then changes some environment variables and starts up the Insight molecular modeling program.

If the script finds that the tutorial directory exists and that it contains at least one .product_name file, it does not check for the presence of any other files, but immediately changes the environment variables and starts up the Insight program.

Thus, if you remove or alter any items in your tutorial directory or if it has been set up for some other product(s), you would need to use biosym_tutorial -i to reconfigure it. Issuing the command with the -i option also allows you to set up the tutorial directory without immediately running the Insight program, if you prefer.
